As a youngster, there was nothing I dreaded more on a beautiful Sunday afternoon than my folks saying, “Let’s go for a ride.” Sunday was a day I could ride my bike, play ball, or just be outside. I did not want to sit in a car as my dad checked out the neighbors’ crops or stopped at some friends or relatives of my folks for a “visit” with people I hardly knew and that had no kids.

I’ve been asked several times, “Where do you get your column ideas from?” Most of the ideas I get, come from everyday experiences. Once I started writing a weekly column, I became more aware of events around me that could possibly be turned into a story. Others have also suggested topics I could write about. Today’s column came directly from a Good Friday church service and a comment a friend made last week over coffee.

It is about time. It has probably frustrated people for ages and now, finally, someone has come up with a solution for this pressing problem. But it is amazing it has taken so long. But finally, Charmin has produced a toilet paper that tears evenly across the sheet.

A story from the Kasson-Mantorville Lions, “The Sounds We Hear,” incorrectly identified the writer of the story as Don Melin. The writer’s correct name is Bob Melin.

The 48th Rochester Woodcarvers Show will be held March 23 and 24, 10 a.m. — 4 p.m., both days at the 4-H Building at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds in Rochester. There is free admission, and a wide variety of carvings will fill the room, plus tools, blanks and wood for sale. The Zumbro Valley Woodturners will have a large display of beautiful turned wood bowls.
