Fire damages Owatonna home

A duplex in Owatonna was badly damaged by fire Thursday afternoon, but officials say two people inside escaped without injury.
The call came in shortly before 3 p.m., sending firefighters to 247 E. Fremont St.
The house is divided into two living units; initial reports of two people in the upstairs unit indicate they got out safely. A spokesman for the Owatonna Police Department said no injuries were reported.

One arrested after alleged threats at OMS

Two young people were detained – and one charged – after authorities say at least one of them made threats outside Owatonna Middle School (OMS).

Promotion prompts OPD changes

With the promotion of Capt. Jeff Mundale to chief of the Owatonna Police Department, other changes in personnel are coming.
Mundale will assume his new role on July 1, upon the retirement of Police Chief Keith Hiller. Hiller, a native of Owatonna, has held the position since 2010.

Is there a solution for an older adult who finds touchscreens unresponsive?

Dear Live Grand: We bought my 81-year-old dad a tablet, but he has trouble with it because even though we can make the touchscreen work, he often can’t. Dad also experiences some confusion when we try to engage him in video calls and/or family Zoom gatherings. He’s considering assisted living and we are encouraging this, but even then, we want him connected with us electronically between visits. Does GrandPad address these challenges?

The birthday of the church

This past week was Pentecost Sunday and graduation for the class of 2022!
Pentecost is a big deal – it is the birthday of the church. Yet it gets mixed in with graduation ceremonies and parties and is often overlooked or pushed to the background. And you know what, that’s OK! Because that is what Pentecost is all about, the mixing and mingling of the Holy Spirit with us to form community. Now that is something to truly celebrate!

Fair Board works toward final details

In 68 days, the state’s largest county fair opens its gates to what has traditionally been hundreds of thousands of visitors.
So, what’s left to do?
Seemingly, a lot, but the Steele County Free Fair (SCFF) Board of Directors ticked off several things during its June meeting.
Sponsorships and concessions are coming in, said fair manager Scott Kozelka, and about 1,000 tickets have been presold for grandstand shows.

New flag flies at Czech cemetery

The American flag arrived just in time for Memorial Day at the Czech National Cemetery, located about seven miles southwest of Blooming Prairie in Summit Township.
“It’s the candle on the cake,” said Jim Johnson, capping the cleanup work done at the cemetery the past two years.
The flag is flown over a 25-foot-high flagpole.
