Support grows for Kasson officer critically injured in suicide attempt

Soon after Peggy Marquette moved to Kasson last August she came across Officer Julio Baez late one night. He assisted her in getting money from one of the banks. It was an encounter that left a lasting impression on her.
“We really liked him,” Marquette says. “He’s really a nice cop. He was such a happy guy with a big heart,” she said.

As a youngster David Derby remembers throwing around Swiss flags on the grounds of Zwingli Church by Berne during the annual Swissfest. He’s never lost his love for the church, which is one of the reasons he didn’t hesitate to help out when a new stage was needed. 

NEWS UPDATE: Kasson officer identified in suicide attempt

Dodge County Sheriff Scott Rose has identified the Kasson police officer involved in a shooting incident last weekend as 51-year-old Julio Baez.
Baez remains in critical condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. He is a 14-year veteran of the department. 
Rose said the case in being investigated as an attempted suicide by his investigators.

Arthur Lowell Tvedt, 88, Kasson

Arthur Lowell Tvedt, 88, of Kasson and formerly of Bryon, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 1, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Hospital St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester.  
Lowell was born on May 30, 1930, the son of Clarence and Lydia (Williams) Tvedt on the family farm in Canisteo Township, Dodge County. He enjoyed growing up on the farm and received an 8th grade education at Union Springs School.  

Larry McMartin, 81, Claremont

Larry James McMartin, 81, of Claremont, left this earth a kinder and gentler place because of his presence among us. He died Saturday, May 26, 2018, at home on the land that was homesteaded in 1856, and surrounded by those he loved most.

Anita Mae (Garness) Madery, 81, Kasson

Anita Mae (Garness) Madery, 81, passed away peacefully at Mayo Hospice in Rochester, on May 27, 2018, after a lengthy illness at home, where her family cared for her. 

Dianna (Dornink) Fleshman, 22, formerly of Hayfield

On May 25, 2018, Dianna Fleshman was in a severe car accident and passed away surrounded by her family on May 31, 2018.
She was born June 24, 1995, the fifth of 12 children. She loved gardening, cooking, children, and being with her family.

James Johnson Sr., 78, Blooming Prairie

James J. Johnson Sr., 78 of Blooming Prairie, died Thursday, May 31, 2018 at his home.  
He was born Nov. 25, 1939 in Austin to Alvin and Grace (Filley) Johnson. James was a 1957 graduate of Austin High School and received his Associate’s Degree from Riverland Community College.  

K-M girls advance as a team at section meet

At the beginning of the season, almost every golfer has the goal written down to make the second day of their section tournament. As the Kasson-Mantorville girls golf team approached last week’s Section 1AA Tournament, they knew that they had a couple of young golfers that could find their way to the second day by themselves, but also wanted to get to there as a team in a loaded section.

That’s exactly what is happening around the area. Seniors have finished their school work and now have diplomas in hand for the next venture in their lives. 
I can’t believe how it has been 32 years since I graduated from high school. I can assure you that time passed by quickly. For once I wish time would slow down, but as you get older, I think it goes even faster.
