As I get ready to board my 7 a.m. flight back to Minnesota, I look around and see people from all around the world traveling to places all around the world.
Even with google and other search engines I often notice that people don’t really know much about other states or about other countries.

A new byline will be seen throughout the DCI as Karen Jorgensen joins the DCI staff.
DCI Publisher is pleased to announce the hiring of Jorgensen who will work as a County Staff Writer.
Jorgensen knew that she wanted to be a journalist when she was a junior at Owatonna High School when she took her first journalism class.
Ever since then the Owatonna native has been apart of the business in some way.

Ever since she was a child Katie Macrafic knew she wanted to be a teacher. “This is what I was meant to be,” the Triton kindergarten teacher said.
She has 21 years teaching experience, the last 19 teaching kindergarten at Triton. Her fellow Triton teachers agree and she has been chosen as Triton’s 2018-19 Teacher of the Year.

 As I compiled the year-in-review items for this week’s edition, I also handled the important task of picking the top 10 news stories for 2018. 
It proved to be a great time for me to reflect on the past year of happenings throughout the greater community of Steele County. 

It was the first day of school during 2019 on Wednesday and for Hayfield Community Schools the start to the year was a exciting one.
 
On Wednesday the school held lunch in the new PreK-12 grade  cafeteria for the first time.
 

A Mankato woman was arrested for felony drug possession on Saturday after drugs and other paraphernalia was found.
 
According to the complaint a Deputy with the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle belonging to Sadie Louise Roesch, 23, for numerous driving violations.
 

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Dec. 18, 2018 – Emma Brumfield, a junior pharmacy major from Kasson, Minnesota, is the 2018-19 recipient of the J. Bruce Laughrey Scholarship at South Dakota State University.
 
She is the daughter of Jeff and Kathy Brumfield and a 2016 graduate of Kasson-Mantorville High School.
 
At State, she is involved in Student Collaboration for the Advancement and Promotion of Pharmacy.
 

Donald Ervin Boyum was born in Canisteo Township, on May 31, 1925, to Clara (Alrick) and Anthony Boyum. Don grew up on the farm in rural Kasson.  After high school, Don served for a short time in the Navy doing basic training in Idaho. After a medical discharge he returned to rural Kasson.
