Wildcats look to defend state title
The Dodge County girls hockey team is hoping to defend its Class A state title, after defeating Albert Lea 3-2 to win the Section 1A championship.
“It’s a big honor to return as well be section champions and to be back and then it is great these seniors will get a chance to defend their title and play Proctor again,” head coach Jeremy Gunderson wrote in an email Monday, when asked what it means to be defending section champions.
The championship game started off with neither team scoring in the first period.
In the second period, Kylie Meyer got the scoring going for the Wildcats. Albert Lea came back with two goals to take a 2-1 lead going into the third.
The last period belonged to the Wildcats, with Daisy Harens tying the score, and Maysie Koch scoring the game-winning goal.
Faith Humphrey picked up the win behind the net for the Wildcats with 16 saves.
Asked what the message is going into the state tournament, Gunderson said, “Play Wildcat hockey (and) if we play the way we can, we will be fine.”
The Wildcats were set to play Proctor/Hermantown in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
