Wayne Scherbring named Lion of the Year by Kasson Mantorville Lions Club
Wayne Scherbring, a retired community member with a passion for service, has been named Lion of the Year by the Kasson Mantorville Lions Club.
Scherbring, who joined the club after a simple inquiry at the Lions concession stand during the Kasson Festival in the Park, said the recognition humbled him.
“I was very surprised and had no idea I was even being considered for this award,” Scherbring said. “It means a lot because your peers recognized you for something you were doing anyway. It’s just very special.”
Scherbring said his desire to give back to the community that gave him so much initially drew him to the Lions. Since joining, he has found a group full of energy and purpose.
“The KM Lions as a group has so much positive energy. That’s what keeps me engaged and involved,” he said.
The Lions Club, which donates 80 percent of its annual fundraising proceeds to local causes, offers members a wide range of opportunities to contribute based on their interests and availability.
“No one expects you to do more than you’re willing to do,” Scherbring said. “There are so many opportunities within the club to use whatever talents you have to give back. It is just fun to work with this group.”
Scherbring emphasized that joining the Lions does not require a major commitment, just a willingness to take the first step.
“If you want to serve, the hardest step is to walk up to our concession stand or another KM Lion member and say, ‘Where can I sign up?’” he said. “A lot of times, we get scared of being overcommitted, so we don’t do anything. I want to reassure you that if you sign up for the Lions, you choose how involved you want to be.”
Reflecting on his experience, Scherbring said being part of the KM Lions has been personally rewarding, and he hopes others will consider joining.
“My hope is that we continue to attract people who are willing to give back to this community,” he said. “If you are, please come and join us.”
