Triton seniors named Triple AAA winners

Two Triton High School seniors have been named recipients of this year’s Triple A Award.
The Triton AAA Selection Committee named Kendra Petersohn and Jay Yankowiak as the 2019-2020 AAA Award winners.
Petersohn is the daughter of Tracy and Michelle Petersohn. She has a 4.0 GPA and has participated in volleyball, basketball, track, Minnesota Honor Society, Link Crew, SADD and Choir.
Yankowiak is the son of Rick and Michelle Yankowiak. He has a 3.97 GPA and has participated in football, basketball, baseball, band, spring musical, Link Crew, SADD, Minnesota Honor Society and Knowledge Bowl.
The Triple A is a Minnesota State High School League sanctioned award. The program is designed to recognize high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the fine arts. Qualifications include a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, participation in league sponsored athletic and fine arts activities and compliance with the MSHSL Student Code of Conduct.
Both Petersohn and Yankowiak said that participation in the various activities is beneficial and enjoyable.
Yankowiak said he participates in the activities because “first off it’s a lot of fun.” But also, he said, it motivates him and helps him grow as a person.
Petersohn said she will be attending Gustavus Adolphus College next year and majoring in health and exercise science. She is also considering ultimately going to grad school and pursuing a career in physical therapy.
She also will be playing basketball at Gustavus, she said.
Yankowiak said he has been accepted at several colleges but is not yet certain where he will decide to attend. He does intend to major in some area of engineering, he said. He added he was undecided about participating in sports at the college level.
Triton has been participating in the Triple A program for a number of years, Principal Luke Lutterman said. A committee of local teachers chooses the Triton winners, he said, who are then able to compete through the sub-section and section levels and potentially to the state level.
Triton has had two state Triple A winners, he said, Matt Hanson in 2004 and Logan Spitzack in 2011.
