A potential path to revitalizing downtown Kasson

Both leaders in local government and the community gathered in Austin at the Considering Main Street workshop to learn about a program that could revitalize downtown Kasson.
“I’ve been aware that there is interest in downtown revitalization and thought the program might be a good fit for the community,” Kasson City Administrator Theresa Coleman said. “The workshop is an opportunity for community members feel the same.”
Coleman learned about the Main Street program through a story in Public Management Magazine’s August 2016 issue titled “Revitalization and main street transformation,” written by Patrice Frey. 
The article details how towns are revitalizing downtowns using a four point approach. The four points targeted in this approach are economic vitality, design, promotions and organization. Addressing these four points involves the creation of economic development strategies, incorporating design into a downtown, marketing the downtown and creating a downtown organization. 
By using this strategy over the past 35 years, 2,000 communities have revitalized a downtown district and reinvested more than $65 billion.
