Police hiring changes

Kasson-Mantorville students are getting to know a new School Resource Officer in the 2016-2017 school year after former SRO Jason Peck was promoted to Sergeant. 
With the recent changes in the Kasson Police Department, Officer Jesse Kasel recently made the transition from Patrol Officer to School Resource Officer. Kasel had been working as a Patrol Officer since 2010. The promotion has been quite a change for Kasel. 
“I had been patrolling the streets, giving me a few years to understand what the job as a police officer is before I started something like this,” Kasel said. “This is a whole new thing with whole new challenges and completely different from being on patrol.
According to Kasel, an SRO has three main roles within the school district. Kasel addressed a common misconception about the role of an SRO in the first reason they are in schools.
“A lot of people think we’re here because there’s a lot of crime in schools, which K-M doesn’t have a lot of crime here, and that’s not why we’re here,” Kasel said. “SROs, in general, their
