Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

A pirate’s life is for everyone again. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales shows there’s some waters still worth exploring in this fifth installment of the franchise.
The plot follows the continued adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, as he’s joined by the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan. They’re on a quest for the trident of Poseidon, an object that commands the sea and can break any curse.
After the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the subsequent sequels have seen increasing rough waters with frayed plot threads and bizarre non-sequiturs. This is by far the best sequel of the franchise.
The movie does continue one disturbing trend in CGI: de-aging characters. It’s used to turn Johnny Depp back into a twenty year-old in a flashback scene. This technology was debatable, if necessary, for a film like Star Wars: Rogue One, where actors needed to appear exactly as they had decades prior, but in this movie it’s wholly unnecessary.
There’s no reason they couldn’t have cast a younger actor to fill in. Usually used for brief glimpses, the technology has not advanced to withstanding extended scenes and the result is the character’s face and eyes not moving quite right. A shame, because its a neat origin moment for Sparrow.
While the movie never hits the highs of the first installment, it has a cohesive plot that thrills and feels by turns. While it’s not yet known if there will be another sequel, this movie parallels the first installment and feels like a fitting send-off of to the franchise. If you want to join your favorite pirate at sea again or just want a clean farewell, this is one dead man’s tale you’ll want to hear.
