Open communication key as district addresses budget issues
I wanted to provide an update on our school’s financial situation.
As previously communicated, Triton is working with the Minnesota Department of Education to develop a Special Operating Plan. This is required for school districts identified as being in Statutory Operating Debt (SOD), which occurs when a district’s unassigned fund balance falls below -2.5%.
Based on our 2024-25 audit, Triton’s unassigned fund balance was -3.49%.
The majority of school district expenditures are on staff salaries and benefits. Budget changes and staffing adjustments can bring many different emotions and feelings. We have a strong Triton team, and the success of our school district is built on working together and supporting one another.
Staffing changes are challenging, as all employees have value, and our success depends on professionals filling a variety of instructional, support and operational roles. I do want to be honest about our position and make sure that staff, parents, and community members are aware that staffing changes are necessary to balance our budget.
Our most significant financial challenge is recovering from multiple consecutive years of deficit spending and declining enrollment. Expenditures exceeded revenues for four consecutive school years, beginning in 2021-22. This trend must change.
The passage of the Capital Projects Levy this past November and the previous budget alignment for 2025-26 will help move us in the right direction. With that being said, we still have a deficit we need to recover from. This will take time, but I believe we have a good plan that will create a solid financial foundation.
Triton will continue to operate at a high level, but we must take steps to correct our deficit spending. We remain committed to open communication and transparency throughout this process. We will continue to prioritize the best learning experiences possible for our students and a positive work environment for staff.
Thank you for your continued engagement and support. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.
