Syrlene Williamson, age 85 of Austin, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea.  
Syrlene Merlene Ann Turvold was born Jan. 10, 1933 in Northwood, Iowa, the daughter of Helmer and Selma (Midge) Turvold. She attended country schools and Austin High School.  

A Celebration of Life and inurnment for Doris M. Vail will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kasson.  
Doris M. Vail, 93 of Mesa, Ariz., died Monday, January 29, 2018, following a brief illness and complications from the influenza virus.  

Jeanette Alice (Chrz) Truelson, 71, passed away at her home in Kasson on Sept. 5, 2018.
Jeanette was born on April 9, 1947, the daughter of Frank and Alice (Kycek) Chrz in Freeborn County. She was united in marriage to Paul Truelson on Oct. 16, 1966, in Oakland, Minn.

Gerald (Jerry) Norbert Machacek, 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning Sept. 6, 2018, at Prairie Meadows Assisted Living in Kasson. 

Klaus W. Alberts, 86, of Mantorville passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018 at Season’s Hospice in Rochester.
Klaus was born on the family farm near Mantorville on May 27, 1932 to Klaus H. and Henrietta (Etta) (Raddatz) Alberts. He graduated from Mantorville High School. After graduation, Klaus enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

I love photojournalism.
It’s a particular form of journalism involving the collecting, editing and presenting of news material for publication that employs images in order to tell a news story. They are visual images of a story that back up a writer’s words. In the case of papers like ours, a photojournalist likely will be the writer as well. 

Last week, the Kasson- Mantorville football team dropped a tough game against Zumbrota-Mazeppa. While the sting of the 13-10 defeat was still fresh in their minds, the KoMets knew that they had plenty of football yet to be played and that task started with hosting La Crescent Sept. 7 at KMTelecom Stadium.

A couple of gems have flourished out of last weekend’s Marigold Days in Mantorville.
On Saturday night, organizers of the town’s annual festival gave out two gem awards—historic and present. 
The historic gem went to Willis E. Fryer, who moved to the Mantorville area in the early 1900s. He set up property just south of town where he developed a mass of plants and flowers.

There’s no shortage of patriotism in Mantorville.
The community erected 196 American flags as part of “Field of Flags” next to the Dodge County Government Services Building at a kick off to Marigold Days Thursday night. The flags were lit up and displayed throughout the weekend celebration that attracts thousands of people to town.
