Free summer classes offered at library
Once our Summer Reading Program begins, it seems like we are on a merry-go-round that doesn’t stop! It is great to be able to see families and especially kids coming to our programs.
Be sure and join us on Thursday, June 16 at 1 p.m. for the Bazillions, a children’s singing group. Last year, we recorded them to be seen on Facebook, but this year they will be live and in person. Singing and dancing to their music is encouraged!
We have events in June that you need to sign up for. The first, GSK Science in the Summer by the Bakken Museum is for students entering 2nd through 5th grades. We never know for sure what they will be doing, but three years ago sheep eyes were involved. Just give us a call to sign up for the program that will be held on Wednesday, June 22 from 2-4 p.m.
A few weeks ago the library put out a survey to gauge what our patrons are interested in. The top two responses were clay and leather working. Thanks to the Library Legacy program, we are able to offer both topics this summer. Clay time will be in August, but mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 22 for two classes in leatherworking put on by Doubletree Leatherworks. The first, Smash It in Leather, is for ages 5 and up with no sharp tools involved; it will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. Participants will learn to create designs in leather by compressing the fibers using special tools to create a pattern that is your own style. Each student will get one leather shape to stamp that is theirs to keep. Shapes can be turned into coasters, ornaments, magnets, key rings, bag charms, pendants or bookmarks. Only 16 students can attend, so call us to sign up!
The second class is creating a bifold leather wallet. This class will be one session and take 3-4 hours to complete. Learn about pattern tracing, cutting leather, applying a stamp, applying protective finish, hand stitching/lacing techniques, and edge finishing. All materials will be provided. A fun class that shows you how to create something useful, durable and classy! The class is limited to eight participants ages 14 and older.
All these events are free, so come and take advantage of these opportunities!
