Hot dogs on the run
Hungry for a tasty, juicy hot dog?
When traveling on Highway 218 just south of Main Street, stop by one of Blooming Prairie’s newest businesses. It’s called Dogs on the Run and in actuality, it is a mobile hot dog stand positioned in front of the Speedy Wash & Pet Spaw.
Steve Cartier and wife Marie of Ellendale are proprietors of this hot dog stand on wheels. The Cartiers transport a Dreammaker hot dog cart on a trailer pulled by an SUV.
The Cartiers have been running the stand for two weeks and report some heavy business at times. Customers include truckers coming through Blooming Prairie on Highway 218 and they also include local residents like Sue Zwiener, who stopped by to buy two hot dogs to take home over the dinner hour.
Main Street construction workers have become regular customers of the Cartiers.
Hot Dogs on the Run also offers bratwurst, chips and soda. The hot dogs are one-third of a pound and are all beef. They can be topped with sauerkraut, relishes, ketchup, mustard and some jalapeños can even be sprinkled on top.
The hot dog stand is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in Blooming Prairie from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The noon hour of course is the rush time for business.
On Wednesdays, Cartier takes his stand to Daikin Air Conditioning in Owatonna, across from Wal-Mart. He feeds employees twice a day, first and second shifts.
On Fridays and Saturdays, Steve is busy getting supplies for his food stands. On Sundays, he sets up shop at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds, site of the Gold Rush Flea Market.
Prior to beginning his hot dog business, Cartier ran a small engine repair shop in Farmington, Mo. He and his wife are originally from Florida and recently were rehabilitating from two separate car crashes.
The Cartiers moved to a ten-acre farm on Highway 30 to be closer to their “grand babies,” says Marie. “We wanted to give them space and not move too close to them; we also wanted space to raise some goats, chickens and cows,” Steve said.
“Every day I am here, it gets busier and busier,” Steve said with a big smile on his face.
Plunk down $3, add some condiments and you have a mouth watering hot dog on a bun on a sunny, summer day.
