It’s prom season at area high schools

Tis the season, for prom! Last year area high schools cancelled their proms, but this year they’re back, with some having already been held and some coming up.
Hayfield High School held its prom on Saturday, April 24, with prom Queen Madison Johnston and prom King Collin Kay. It’s actually been two years since Hayfield had a high school prom, but after a year of pandemic disappointments for students, 2021 prom was a huge success, reports Tanya Rieken with Hayfield High School.
“Although prom looked a bit different this year, students were able to have a grand march, dance and an all-night after prom party at the school,” she said. “This year’s theme was Enchanted Forest, which included a gym full of lighted trees.”
“There were 113 students in attendance,” Rieken said. “The after prom party was held at the school where kids enjoyed an inflatable obstacle course, games, bingo, a hypnotist and almost $8,000 in prizes were given away.”
Kasson-Mantorville High School’s prom is Saturday, May 8, and about 300 tickets have been sold thus far. The theme is “A Year to Remember.”
Grand March will be held at the high school, which is not open to the public. You need a ticket to get in, and tickets are going to parents only. Then there will be a prom dinner and dance at Somerby Golf Club in Byron.
Prom wasn’t held at K-M last year.
“We’re just trying to make it as normal as we possibly can,” said Jessica Schoenfelder, activities secretary and prom coordinator. “There’s no after prom party this year, kids voted not to have one. We’re doing prize giveaways at the dance. We’ll eat in two separate spots. Part of the kids will be in a tent and part of the kids will be in the Somerby ballroom.”
K-M’s prom will be live streamed as well, on YouTube. The Grand March starts at 4:30 p.m. on May 8.
Triton High School’s Prom is Saturday, May 15, with a Grand March and then the dance at Somerby. The theme this year is “Mysterious Masquerade.” One hundred seventy students are signed up as of now, with tickets given away to parents.
No prom was held at Triton last year, though they did have a golf cart parade around the school grounds and through the town of Dodge Center.
This year, there will be a Grand March and then the group will parade around the school. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the fun.
“I want to thank the students and families for their ongoing patience and understanding,” said Luke Lutterman, Triton principal. “They have been fantastic to partner with.”
