Swinging clubs at Somerby Golf Club
Somerby Golf Club is a member-only golf club in Byron. Director of Membership and Marketing Brett Mucheck said what makes the golf course stand out is how well it’s maintained. “The greens are maintained in immaculate shape at all time. The greens are incredibly quick and difficult. There are wide open fairways so it’s easy for people to hit shots and not get penalized, but the greens make it very difficult,” he said. Overall, he said it’s a challenging, but fair golf course. The course, which was designed by former world no. 1 Tom Lehman, regularly receives high marks.
“It’s one of the top golf courses in the state of Minnesota, it’s ranked every year in Golf Digest magazine,” he said. In addition to being high quality, Mucheck said the course is walker-friendly and features plenty of natural habitats, since it’s a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. For those who aren’t interested in playing golf, he said what will appeal to them the most is the social aspect of the club. “The thing that’s going to make a difference is the time you spend on the patio. The people, that’s really the big difference-maker,” he said. In terms of amenities, the club offers almost everything an individual or family could want. It features a swimming pool and kid’s wading pool, fitness room, a banquet room, a board room and two restaurants: The Chophouse and The Grille. The Chophouse is the quieter of the two, good for members who want to have a lunch meeting or date night. Meanwhile, The Grille is busier since people are coming in and out of the pool area. “The pool area gets used heavily. It’s really the hub of the club,” Mucheck said. Want to golf in the winter? The club utilizes its golf simulator to host winter golf leagues. He said golfers book tee times just like they would for the golf course.
During the winter, he said members use the ponds for ice fishing. The club typically offers fishing during the summer too, but due to COVID-19 they’re not offering that this year.
