Veteran reporter joins DCI staff

A new byline will be seen throughout the DCI as Karen Jorgensen joins the DCI staff.
DCI Publisher is pleased to announce the hiring of Jorgensen who will work as a County Staff Writer.
Jorgensen knew that she wanted to be a journalist when she was a junior at Owatonna High School when she took her first journalism class.
Ever since then the Owatonna native has been apart of the business in some way.
“Something clicked and I knew what I wanted to do,” Jorgensen said.
During her time in college she was able to work a summer job at the Owatonna Peoples Press during summer breaks.
For Jorgensen her first job out of the University of Minnesota was with KDHL radio in Faribault. From there she went to a newspaper in Lakeville.
Jorgensen has spent the majority of her careeer  working in what is considered community newspapers like the DCI.
During her career in journalism Jorgensen has traveled the country working at various newspapers in different roles.
Some of these different places include Wisconsin, Texas, New York and Maryland.
In Minnesota she spent time at newspapers including the Owatonna Peoples Press, West Concord News Enterprise/ DCI and the Star Herald.
For Jorgensen, her favorite part about being in the world of community journalism is the fact that it is very diverse and the type of assignments can change day to day and sometimes even hour by hour.
“I have always liked the variety in community journalism. One day I could be talking to a senator or other politician and the next day doing a story with kindergarten kids,” Jorgensen explained.
Jorgensen’s primarily assignments will include Dodge Center, Triton Schools, West Concord, Claremont and agriculture issues, including feedlots.
The DCI is looking forward to having a well rounded seasoned reporter on staff especially one that is very familiar with the communities she will be covering.
