Heydts named Hayfield Chamber Citizens of Year

Phil and Sherry Heydt were named 2017 Citizens of the Year on Feb. 10 during the Hayfield Chamber of Commerce’ 32nd-annual Citizen of the Year banquet, at Hayfield American Legion Post 330.
“Everybody told us the award was for Brad, Phil said, referring to his son, Hayfield-area farmer Brad Heydt. “They lied to us. Unbelievable. We never even considered it was us.”
“It’s quite an honor,” Sherry Heydt said.
Chamber of Commerce secretary Richard Rieken said the Heydts are active in church, the Hayfield schools, and the Boy Scouts.
“These people put time into everything,” he said. “They’ve got thousands of hours in at the Oaks golf course. They’re board members out there, they do landscaping, they pick up rocks and put them out there. They’re both retired farmers. To this day you’ll see Sherry driving down the road in one of those big Cat tractors, carrying tillage equipment. Just very impressive people.”
“They donate, they give their time to it, just like ther volunteers have before them,” Rieken said. “Without volunteers like Phil and Sherry, our town would not be as great as it is.”
The Citizen of the Year program began in 1986. Deb Towey was the first recipient.
