Triton girls break school record in 4x800 relay

The Triton track and field team hosted a successful meet on May 20 when a field of ten schools headed to Dodge Center in one of the final competitions of the year. While the boys team had an impressive third-place finish behind Byron and St. Peter, the girls earned the highlight of the afternoon by breaking a school record that has stood for 20 years.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Nell Graham, Greta Rhodes, Kendra Petersohn and Courtney West finished with a time of 10:34.7 in Friday’s meet. That time was six seconds better than the previous record which was held by Jessica Brossard, Jill Hornung, Emily Selthun and Beth Schultz back in 1996.
The record time was an adjustment within the team as standout distance runners Graham and West focused more on speed rather than their distance races. Meanwhile, sprinters Rhodes and Peterson also stepped up and ran well to help break the mark.
Later in the meet, West would continue her dominance in the 1600 meter run when she caught up to Katherine Hoffman of Cannon Falls late in the race. With a time of 5:22.88, West was able to pull ahead and pick up another victory in the event that has become her specialty.
The boys third-place finish was fueled by the effort of the 4x100 meter relay team. Fernando Bugarin, Justin Ness, Jaday Tate and Jax Bryngelson turned in a time of 47.44 to win the event. Nolan Ferber also did his part to aid the Cobras with a long jump of 18’ 7 ½” to pick up another victory.
As a team, the Cobras looked like they were peaking at the right time as they set 28 personal records on the afternoon. Triton also had a pair of runner up finishes including the girls 4x100
