When Governments Topple

WheneverI have the opportunity to communicate with people regarding politics, which can be defined as dealing with the structure, organization, and administration of the state, I attempt to keep a balanced perspective in that which is eternal and that which is temporary.
I am first and foremost a citizen of the Kingdom of God. Philippians 3:20 (NLT) — “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.” There is great security in that truth knowing that I have my citizenship in a place that will never fall. Hebrews 12:28 (NLT) — “Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.”
However, the Bible has much to say about earthly kingdoms, nations and governments. A troubling verse comes from Proverbs 28:2 (NLT) — “When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily. But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability.”
When there is moral rot within a nation that elects its leaders, usually the leaders represent the moral decay of its people, therefore the structure, organization, and administration of the nation becomes immoral. That government and that nation can topple easily.
Here is where it is imperative that we first pray for those who are in positions of authority, that they would lead with a moral compass. 1 Timothy 2:2—4 (NLT) — 2 “Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.” Second, that we do our best to elect leaders described in Proverbs 28:2 as “wise and knowledgeable” so that our nation would be one of stability and not easily toppled.
The passage in 1 Timothy speaks of an environment of peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. I believe this is the environment that gives greatest opportunity for God’s people to speak truth and people to understand truth which will lead towards God’s will being done and that is the eternal salvation of all people. In an environment of moral decay, truth will be labeled as “violent, hate speech, bigoted and intolerant.” There will be a great attempt to censure truth as it confronts immorality.
So, for the best outcome for all, 1) Pray for all in authority, 2) Elect leaders that are wise and knowledgeable, and 3) Receive the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ to secure your future in a kingdom that cannot be shaken and will never topple. Revelation 11:15 (NLT) — “Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting in heaven: ‘The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.’”
