RCC Open House Sunday, Oct. 7
Rochester Community College will hold an Open House on Sunday, October 7, 1973 from 1-4 p.m. The community is cordially invited to visit the campus and tour the full college facilities. Of special interest will be the newly completed College Center, Art Building, Student Personnel Services Building and the Classroom-Office Building. Student Guides will direct visitors about the campus, and host will be members of the RCC Advisory Board, Foundation Board, and Rochester Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. In addition, students and staff will be available to answer questions about Rochester Community College.

4-H dairy beef showmanshipat MN State Fair
Shannon Wolf, age 15 of Dodge County, was selected as the Reserve Champion in Dairy Beef Showmanship at the 1993 Minnesota State Fair 4-H Livestock Show Saturday, September 4th. Shannon is the daughter of Richard and Lisa Wolf of RR1, Box 94, Claremont and a member of the D.C. Ducks 4-H Club. A total of 106 head paraded before official judge Dennis DeWitt, northwest Iowa’s area livestock specialist, with the Iowa Extension Service. Shannon received the award from the MN Foundation. The 4-H Dairy Steer Show at the Minnesota State Fair is one of the many educational events that are coordinated by the Minnesota Extension Service and conducted by Extension Educators and 4-H volunteers.

Mantorville is making plans for city’s 150th anniversary
Mantorville is busy making plans for their 2004 Sesquicentennial. Monday, October 6 there will be an open house at Mantorville City Hall from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Sesquicentennial committee will be selling t-shirts for $10. The logo, designed by Randy Wilbur of Kasson, will be used on all promotional material. A quilt was also made using all the entries in the logo contest. The quilt is on display at the Citizens State Bank in Mantorville. The merchandise being sold will help to finance promotions and some of the other activities. Letters have been sent to area businesses for financial help. Any individual donations can be sent to the city hall. A donation of $125 or more will qualify an individual or business to be a Super Star Advertiser. Super Star donations need to be in by January 1 so the list of advertisers can be printed on the promotional schedule of events. If you have questions contact, Cheryll Selle at city hall, 635-5170.

S.W. Kasson neighborhoodwill be changing!
The Kasson City Council briefly discussed development potential for the community over the next couple of years. City administrator Randy Lenth said the city planned to set up a southwest neighborhood meeting to talk to the residents about the potential for the commercial development in Lions Park along Mantorville Avenue. “The neighborhood is going to be changing,” said the city administrator. Oppidan, Inc. is in the process of pursuing the possibility of purchasing land that is part of the Lions Park. The land would be used for a 36,000 square foot retail structure and 6,500 square foot fast food/convenience store building. Oppidan has proposed to swap that land for a new public park and to provide funding to relocate the current park equipment and funding for lot paving. The city is working to obtain 16 acres of Carter Blaine’s property to the west of the existing park land as part of the land swap. In order for the swap to take place the city needed to obtain a Quit Claim Deed from the school district so the park land could be developed for retail purposes. The reason the Quit Claim Deed was needed is because when the school district donated the land to the city in 1962 there was a clause that stated the land could be used for park and recreation purposes only. A group of southwest area residents upset with the city for attempting to change the park land into commercial property has set a neighborhood meeting for Monday, October 7 at 6 p.m. in Lions Park. “Can we think about how this will destroy the people living in this area?” was a comment made in a letter to the editor appearing in this week’s issue of the DCI. Oppiden has shared a perspective layout of the retail space and parking lot in Lions Park with the city. They would like to be under construction by next April. In another matter Family Dollar General has purchased two acres of land from Joel Bigelow next to the Carriage House Animal Hospital. The franchise business sells products from groceries to household gifts, clothing and health and beauty products. They tend to open new stores in communities where the larger chains are not likely to go. Family Dollar General is working on annexation agreements with Mantorville Township and City of Kasson.
