KoMets maul Tigers prior to section playoffs
For a small stretch of the season, the Kasson-Mantorville football team had to hit the reset button after a fast 3-0 start that finished with a destruction of La Crescent in its third game of the year. After losses to Stewartville and Rochester Lourdes, the KoMets needed to find their composure and edge in order to capitalize on their strong start and gain steam heading into the section playoffs.
As the follow up to strong victories over Byron and Cannon Falls, the KoMets re-established themselves as contenders for a section championship as they dominated Lake City 42-18 in their final game of the regular season.
“The kids felt pretty good coming in,” K-M football coach Broc Threinen observed. “You just had one of those feelings as a coach that they were ready to go and they executed real well.”
The KoMets got off to a Usain Bolt like start in the first quarter as quarterback Matt Winkle accounted for the KoMets first four touchdowns of the game with three on the ground and a touchdown pass to Cole Marshall for a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. After a Lake City touchdown by Parker Shurhammer, the KoMets continued to throttle the Tigers with two more touchdowns at the end of the first half for a 42-6 advantage before coasting to victory.
With the way that the KoMets played well on both sides of the ball, it was a major confidence boost heading into the Section 1AAAA playoffs this week.
