Kasson Eye Care sets goal of 2,020 cans of food for 2020

Kasson Eye Care has set a special goal for 2020 – 2,020 cans of food for the Kasson Food Shelf in 2020.
Dr. Christine Leska explained that 2020 is special year for an optometry practice because 20/20 vision is perfect. And to celebrate, she said, her office decided to donate 2,020 cans of food to the Food Shelf this year.
To accomplish the goal, she said, the office is donating one can of food for every pair of glasses they sell.
Leska and her staff made their first food donation to the Food Shelf recently when they donated 191 cans of vegetables.
“We want to help the community,” Leska said, adding that it could not be a better time for a donation.
The food shelf has seen an increased need for food in recent weeks since business closures and the recent stay-at-home order related to COVID-19 has increased the number of people who are out of work and with decreased or no income.
Those same situations have impacted Leska’s office, she said, as it is currently closed except for emergencies and some sales deliveries such as glasses and contact lenses.
The office is currently open from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Leska said, for curbside delivery of glasses and contact lenses and emergency repairs.
Patients should call when they pull up to the office and a staff member will come out with the order.
The first delivery of food, which weighed 208.8 pounds, represented the amount raised during the first quarter of 2020.
The numbers started out well, Leska said, but dropped off in March when the business restrictions began.
She said she anticipates that business will pick up again when the office can reopen and they can get back on track to meet their 2020 goal.
As the cans of corn and other vegetables were carried into the Food Shelf building, Leska explained that they chose the canned vegetables because that is what the Food Shelf said was most needed. The vegetables, she added, were purchased at Erdman’s in Kasson.
The Kasson Food Shelf, which serves all of Dodge County and is a Semcac agency, is in need of donations during this time of increased need. Monetary donations help in purchasing food from Channel One in Rochester and donations of food are also always accepted.
