I Thought I Was Rich

Enner Fjerstad from Kasson has written over 100 different religious songs. Here is one of her songs that tells a story which she sang recently during a church service.
I Thought I Was Rich
Thought I was rich, thought I had everything.
Big fancy car and a whole lot of things.
People looked up to me in my mansion on a hill,
the envy of others they talk about it still.

Reading the paper and on a park bench one day,
I noticed an old man who stumbled by my way.
A toothless old smile with holes in both his shoes,
his clothes were torn tattered and smelled of day old booze.

He looked up at me and much to my surprise,
I could tell he was blind, you could see it in his eyes.
He started to ramble on how it was such a beautiful day.
The sun so brightly shining, and his favorite month was May.

He asked me what was wrong, Why wasn’t I a happy man?
I called him an old fool, mind your business you foolish old man!
I am your business, why can’t you understand?
You’d be better off in darkness, maybe you would see better then.
Life is but a gift, it can be taken anytime,
look all around you, and open up your eyes.

Filled with shame and sadness, I hung my head and cried,
Lord forgive what I have done, and bitterly wept inside.
I wanted to shake the hand of the man that changed my life,
but all alone on the park bench, there was no one left in sight.

Now I pray each morning, and pray every night,
thanking the Lord for the blind man, that truly gave me sight.
It took the blind man for me to see.
Yes, it took the blind man … for me to see.
