A Glimpse of Steele County

The Steele County Times continues to evolve.
Over the last couple of weeks our county staff writer has taken a new position in another one of our properties. Shannon Granholm (formerly Kinley, she recently got married) has been promoted to the news editor position over at the DCI in Kasson. Our publisher, Rick Bussler, recently purchased this newspaper. Shannon will have an opportunity to shape the news and the newspaper in Dodge County.
If you remember last summer, Anna Segner did some summer work for us. She has recently graduated and has become the county staff writer. She is from Owatonna, so we feel this is a great fit because Anna knows many of the people in this coverage area. She will be handling Owatonna and Medford, as well as other stories around Steele County.
Also joining us is Laura Berndt. She has taken the position of news editor for the Steele County Times. She has at least three years of experience in journalism; most recently handling the news editor duties for the St. Charles Press. Part of her job assignments deal with Blooming Prairie and Ellendale.
For me personally, Shannon will be deeply missed. It has been enjoyable watching her grow in the journalism field after just one year. She has a lot of energy and is very dedicated to her craft. I have no doubt she will do just fine over in Dodge County.
The two new young ladies on board also have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, which will make it that much easier for me to keep enthused and energized. The two of them bring in new ideas, which is always important with a growing newspaper. And the Steele County Times is growing.
Each week it seems we are doing things that we didn’t do a year ago or even two years ago. If you have noticed, we are averaging 32 pages each week. Just a year ago, we averaged 24-28 pages a week. And that can be challenging in its own right. The important thing for us is to get people in that are willing to grow with us. And I think we’ve done this with the three young ladies listed above.
