Everyone knows Scott Larson after 40 years at grocery store
Scott Larson attended the old Kasson School for grades 1 – 3, then Mantorville for grades 4 – 6, and he graduated from Kasson-Mantorville in 1988. He did participate in the school choir for the concerts in grade school, but was not involved with other school activities. He did enjoy going to the K-M Prom, and the Post Prom in Rochester. He got into a food fight but managed to stay out of trouble.
Scott and his parents took trips to the Wisconsin Dells and the House on the Rocks. He tried fishing once at a creek near Oslo, but that was one and done. Growing up he liked to go to the Dodge County Fair and the rides, especially the Ferris Wheel and the Scrambler. One time a friend wanted to go on the Tilt-A-Whirl and he told her, I just got done eating so we should wait a while, but his friend wanted to go right now. He told her don’t rock or spin the car we are in or I might get sick. Things didn’t go so well as his prediction came true during the ride! He has given up on carnival rides as many of us can relate when we get older.
At age 16, Scott started at Erdmans, and he washed dishes in the bakery on Saturdays and did this for a few years. He operated the donuts fryer in the bakery for a time, and then bagged groceries for several years. He would also deliver groceries to the K-M school, and he would help do some of the serving in the lunchroom kitchen.
Scott worked with Mike Langan and several of the store managers at Erdmans. He would deliver groceries to people in Kasson at times, and he also started working the checkout areas which he does now. He has enjoyed being part of the Hy-Vee unit at the Festival in the Park and Marigold Days parade.
When Hy-Vee bought Erdmans in the fall of 2020, Scott trained at the big Hy-Vee store on Circle Drive for a few weeks while the remodeling was taking place in Kasson. Working at the checkout areas also gives him a chance to talk to the customers on a daily basis. He mostly works Monday through Friday but does an occasional Saturday. Scott has been an employee at Erdmans and now Hy-Vee for 40 years!
Scott was a member of the Kasson Police Reserve for 20 years, and they would help at the Festival in the Park, K-M football games, Big Iron Classic, Dodge County Fair, and other town events. He took training each year for the taser, mace, a shotgun, self-defense, and CPR. He would carry a taser, mace, and handcuffs when they would help at events. They would walk, ride bikes, and ride in the patrol cars at times in Kasson, and the Police Reserves would always work in pairs. He was at some shed fires, and emergency situations at times. His CPR training came in handy a couple of times when a grocery store customer suffered diabetic seizures and needed help and he knew what to do.
Scott does enjoy going to fairs including Steele, Mower, Olmsted, and especially the Dodge County Fair. He has been to the Minnesota State Fair a few times. Scott is not really a big sports fan but he will watch the Vikings and the Twins a few times during the season. He does enjoy watching Mama’s Family and pro wrestling on TV.
Scott lives with his dad and they will go out to eat at the local places in Kasson, the Pizza Ranch, and the Kernel in Owatonna, Center Cafe in Dodge Center, and Hidden Pines at the Zumbro Valley Golf Course.
He used to have pets starting with a beagle called Tippy and then spaniels named Pepper, Bouser, and Dakota, and he would take them out for walks around Kasson. They also had a cat and a fish aquarium, but they have no pets now.
Occasionally Scott will go for rides in his car out in the country just to relax, but you will see him walking around Kasson quite often. One of the things he enjoys is sitting on their front porch and visiting with their neighbors. He doesn’t want to work with computers, and his flip cell phone is enough technology for him. He reads the DCI and Steele County Times newspapers, and he used to read the Post Bulletin until they scaled back their printed editions and have mostly gone online.
There are many with the name Larson in this community, but Scott said they are not related to any of them. Scott does enjoy living in Kasson where he has lived all of his life.
