DCI names Alex Malm as News Editor
Dodge County Independent Publisher Rick Bussler is proud to announce this week the hiring of its News Editor Alex Malm, who comes from a 80,000 person city called Warwick, R.I.
While Malm decided to make a career move to journalism, the Rhode Island native started off wanting to be a lawyer he soon found a different passion.
“I decided to enter the world of journalism after my sophomore year in college,” Malm said. “I had actually just finished an Internship with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, and while I enjoyed it, I knew I wanted to do something else.”
In the same summer, Malm was asked to do political reporting through a newly formed partnership with the Boston Herald and the university.
During the next two years, Malm wrote columns, shot videos and appeared on different Herald radio shows while covering the 2016 Presidential Election both in New Hampshire and around the country.
After graduating in the spring of 2017, Malm was asked to interview for a position in St. James and made the trip to Minnesota for the first time. While visiting the town, he knew that Minnesota would be a great place to start his career.
“After spending my entire life on the east coast, I knew Minnesota would be a rewarding challenge as I would be given a chance to not only report on news but also learn about many things for the first time,” Malm said.
During his time in St. James, Malm did just that learning about a variety of different things like agriculture, and small town living.
“I owe a lot to the St. James and Watonwan County community for being patient as I learned new things,” he said.
Malm is excited to continue his career with DCI and is looking forward to telling the unique stories in the community.
“Covering small towns like Kasson, Mantorville and Dodge County is really special,” Malm said. “Often reporters in small communities get to tell stories that have a direct impact on the readers and the community and is something that I don’t take lightly when I do my reporting,” he added.
