Cobras gore Saints on the ground in big win

Last week, the Triton football team took to the air to hold off a tough test from Chatfield. With quarterback Brady Essig throwing for 240 yards, the Cobras were able to show a new dimension to their offense that hadn’t been seen in recent history. With that in mind, the Cobras elected to show their more traditional dominance on the ground last Friday night when they beat up St. Charles for 399 yards on the ground in a 54-38 victory.
With the Cobras being able to attack in a variety of ways, it can be said that they have found their way on offense.
“I think we’ve hit our stride,” Triton head coach Don Henderson said. “We’ve done it a couple different ways the last two weeks with being able to throw against Chatfield and running like we did against St. Charles.”
The Cobras made sure that this contest would be decided early as they raced out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. After tacking on a couple more scores, Triton had a commanding 34-6 advantage heading into halftime, but the Saints would come back stronger in the second half.
The Saints would wake up on offense with 20 points in the third quarter, but couldn’t stop the Cobras offense as they still found themselves down 47-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Things would get a little closer in the fourth, but Triton still had a comfortable margin as they cruised to the final 54-38 score.
Leading the way for the Cobras on the ground was junior Hunter Jennings, who continued his standout campaign with 125 yards on 19 carries with three touchdowns. However, he had plenty of company including fellow junior Levi Smith who had an expanded role with 114 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries to go with three receptions for 17 yards.
“It’s really good to see Levi get more involved in the offense,” Henderson stated. “For him to get a couple touchdowns on the ground and catch a few passes for us, that was really great to see.”
While Henderson would like to see a little tighter effort on the defensive front, it still is a big win for the Cobras, who have battled back to .500 after a 1-3
