Boiler, buses, reasons why KM will be closed on Thursday

 
On Wednesday afternoon, K-M Superintendent, Mark Matuska,announced that there will be no school for the school district on Thursday.
 
One of the main reasons for the decision is because one of the two middle school boilers are currently not working correctly.
According to Matuska the temperature at the middle school has dropped to around 62 degrees but the school district is hopeful that it will be running as normal on Friday. Matuska noted that they are trying to fix the problem today.
 
A second issue  which lead to the district deciding to close and that is the issue of bussing.
 
Matuska explained that the school busses are not in heated garages,unlike some districts.
 
“Much of the fuel is only rated to 25 below and with the morning temps exceeding that, our buses have difficulty starting, and even worse yet, staying running in temperatures in that range.  We need to make sure they are running safely and the fuel does not gel,” Matuska explained.
 
Despite considering a two hour delay on Thursday,the district leaders ultimately came to the conclusion of having no school citing, student safety as their biggest concern.
 
“We realize the day will gradually warm up, and considered a two hour late start, yet with the number of kids who would still be in frigid temperatures while waiting in their bus lines or walking to school, we felt it was prudent to wait this one out one final day,” Matuska stated.
