The Kasson Public Library sponsored Jack Pearson, singer/storyteller, with a Minnesota Library Legacy grant so all ages could enjoy his timeless music. Pearson entertained 82 people at the KM Elementary gym on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Pearson brought a music/story experience of imagination, spirit, and history on guitar, fiddle, 5-string banjo, and including his one-and-only amplified toy box lid. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his performance as they clapped and sang along with the entertainer.
K-M School District employees JJ Williams (operations and maintenance department head), Corey Carstensen and Bill Hanson (grounds maintenance) were receiving instruction on how to use the new turf equipment for maintaining the KMTelecom Stadium artificial surface. The representative from the turf company said the surface was in such good shape that it did not need to be raked this year. The equipment fluffs up the pellets which get packed into the artificial surface after a certain amount of use. Generally they will need to use the machine on the surface twice a year.

The K-M Booster Club and parents of players will be hosting a hog roast for the Friday night football game September 6 when the KoMets take on Byron. Serving will start at 6 p.m. and continue through the game (or until the pork is gone). The evening has also been designated as the K-M football players and cheerleaders parents night. Players and cheerleaders and their parents will be introduced at halftime of the game. Last week the event was incorrectly listed as Friday, August 30. K-M does play that night but they will be at Triton to open the season. The first home game is Friday, September 6.
If you own a hand-crafted or antique quilt you would be willing to display at this years Marigold Days Quilt Show, bring your entry to the community’s historic Opera House on Wednesday, September 4th between 3-6 pm. This show continues to be a highlight for many people attending the annual Mantorville Marigold Days, which are being held September 7th & 8th.

An acceleration lane going south and a by-pass lane heading north have been added to Highway 57 between Kasson and Mantorville to prepare for the hauling of ash this fall. Olmsted County is picking up the estimated $14,000 improvement and safety feature cost to get ready for the hauling of ash from Dodge to the new Kalmar Township site in Olmsted County. An estimated 100 truckloads of ash a day will be hauled from the landfill site in Kasson to the new location in Olmsted. Because of the risk of future contamination of the leachate system here, commissioners negotiated with Olmsted officials to have the area cleared of the ash to the new “state of the art” facility in Olmsted. Commissioners determined the long-term cost of cleaning up at the landfill site in the future would be quite a bit more costly than facing the problem today. Trucks will be hauling six days a week, 12 hours a day for almost two months. One truckload of ash will be going through town about every three minutes.
The Forest Resource Center (FRC) in Lanesboro, MN had an open house picnic on Wednesday, August 12 for area educators and their families. Teachers were invited to see what the FRC has to offer for Environmental Education. Their programs are designed for individuals of all ages. They include classroom, hands-on activities and special workshops in the areas of environmental education and natural resource management. The FRC promotes the responsible educational, recreational and economic use and renewal of our natural resources. Kasson-Mantorville teachers in attendance were Diane Lindgren, Melody Larson, Carmen Oliver and Linda Walbruch. Mrs. Walbruch is an elected member on the FRC board of directors.

Labor Day weekend activities at the Zumbro Valley Golf and Recreation Club include the regular breakfast-brunch from 9 to 12 on Sunday. On Monday (Labor Day) there will be a brunch from 9 to 12 followed by a mixed men’s and women’s two ball foursome. There will be a pot luck dinner at 5 p.m. All these activities are for members of the club and their out-of-town guests.
Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL), a pro-life chapter will be organized in Dodge County at a meeting to be held Wednesday evening, September 6 at eight o’clock at the Y.M.C.A. Hall in dodge Center. Mrs. Georgine Alt of Owatonna, president of the Southeastern Minnesota Region, will be the guest speaker. All interested citizens are welcome to attend.
