Courtney Skjeie and Abbey McKern were set up at the farmers’ market during Olde Tyme Days Saturday. They also set up for the farmers’ market in Mantorville on Tuesdays and the farmers’ market in Dodge Center Wednesdays during the summer. The girls sell homemade cupcakes, bars, cookies, jelly, plaques, books and more. They will be juniors and are raising money for a K-M band and choir trip to Nashville next April.
The Kasson-Mantorville Lions Club held their June picnic for members and spouses at Veterans Memorial Park. Club President Madonna Norton turned over her gavel to the new president for the 2012-2013 year, Bob Melin. Bob has held several offices as a K-M Lion and has been involved with many club projects. Bob has also been a Lion member in other communities where he worked and lived prior to his move to this area. Anyone who is interested in information on becoming a Lion may contact Dave Aakre at 634-7213.

Guys & Dolls Hairstyling and Tanning will be having a “Cut-A-Thon” and “Tan-A-Thon” Friday, July 12 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Haircuts will be $7 (wash and style not included) and tanning will be $2 a session. Guys & Dolls is located at 15 2nd Avenue, N.W. in Kasson, Between Erdmans and the Kasson State Bank. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the 2002 Kasson Festival In the Park fundraising effort. Money raised will help to pay for the live entertainment, fireworks display and grande parade. The Kasson festival In the Park is August 8-11, 2002.
Kasson resident Trenton Thorpe, a 2002 spring graduate of K-M High School, will play football at Augsburg College, according to the school football staff. Thorpe, a wide receiver and tight end, is the son of Kirk and Debbie Thorpe of Kasson. Thorpe was a three-year letterwinner in football. He was also a member of the school’s basketball team as a post player and on the track and field team as a high jumper. Academically, he received Student of the Month honors and was class secretary/treasurer. Head coach Jack Osberg enters his 12th season as Augsburg’s football coach, the third longest tenure of any head coach in the MIAC. He hopes to improve on last season’s 4-6 overall and 4-5 MIAC record. The Auggies host three of their first four games of the season at home, at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis. Augsburg opens its season Saturday, September 7 at 1 p.m. against NAIA school Dakota State University, then hosts Wisconsin IAC co-champion Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday, September 14 at 7 p.m.

Kasson Food Shop employee Kari McIntire did not mind seeing mosquitoes at all. In fact three in a row made her $10,000 richer one week ago. McIntire, who works the night shift at the Food Shop, purchased her tickets during the day and scratched off three like amounts to win the big prize. The odds of winning the Mosquito Madness top prize is one in 120,000.
The Kasson Midget Baseball Team split a double-header with Stewartville. Stewartville won the first game 7-3. Kasson had seven hits, led by Curt Dorschner with two. Dorschner also pitched, striking out six. In the second game Kasson came back to win 8-7. Ashly Bright scored the game winning run in the bottom of the fifth on a ground ball by Josh Iverson. Joe Fitch and Ben Rendler each had two hits. Danny Deltoro pitched for Kasson. He struck out nine batters and also hit a homerun to lead off the bottom of the first.

The Dodge County Association of Retired Persons will hold their annual picnic in the West Side Park at Dodge Center on Tuesday, July 11 with dinner at 12 noon. Please bring your own dishes, sandwiches, coffee and a dish to pass. Ice cream will be furnished. There will be a program and a social hour following the dinner. All senior citizens in the county are invited to attend.
Airman First Class Ardell L. Riedel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Loren A. Riedel, 304 Second Avenue SW, Kasson, Minnesota has been named Outstanding Airman at Minot AFB, North Dakota. Airman Riedel, a pavement maintenance specialist, was selected for his exemplary conduct and duty performance. He is assigned to a unit of the Strategic Air Command, America’s nuclear deterrent force of long range bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles. The airman is a 1969 graduate of Kasson-Mantorville High School. His wife, Paulette, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Carney of 407 North Mantorville Ave., Kasson.
