Upcoming ‘volleyball under the lights’ seeks to break attendance record

The origins of the upcoming ‘volleyball under the lights’ game on Aug. 28 in the KMTelecom stadium pitting Kasson-Mantorville against Triton can be found in Nebraska.
In August of 2023, over 90,000 attendees gathered in Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska to watch the Nebraska Cornhuskers play Omaha. The event set the NCAA record for attendance for women’s volleyball, and years later inspired a similar event in Dodge County.
Kasson-Mantorville Schools Activities Director Broc Threinen wanted to create a similar event in Kasson-Mantorville, “To have something different and unique for the girls.”
After preliminary research, however, he struggled to find similar outside volleyball games not just in Minnesota, but across the country.
“I don’t think there’s been one in Minnesota,” said Threninen.
While temperature and weather are concerns, so too are the basics of setting up a volleyball court in a football stadium.
Threinen called dozens of companies that might be able to set up the court. Some required plywood or oriented strand board to be put down before the court could even be constructed. In the end, Threninen went with Mayo Civic Center, which the school district has previously worked with, to set up the court.
The volleyball court will be positioned before the home side of the stadium allowing fans to watch the teams from the stands.
While there are still details of the event, from pre-game activities and food still to be determined, Threninen has ambitions of setting an attendance record for KM volleyball.
The game is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 28, at 8:15 p.m. at the KM football stadium with the Triton Cobras playing Kasson-Mantorville KoMets. Tickets can be bought on the Bound App or purchased the day of the game.
