Candidate filings open for city, school elections

Kasson-Mantorville Superintendent Beth Giese, like other top officials in school districts and cities across Minnesota, recently posted a reminder about the upcoming school board election filing period on Facebook.

Unlike county and state offices, which require an earlier filing period because of primary elections, school boards, and city councils, the filing period is July 14 until July 28.

A question was asked by one person on Giese’s post: was anyone running for re-election at KM?

“As far as I know, I don’t believe they are planning to run again,” Giese wrote in response. “They have each given a great deal of time and dedication to serving our students and community, and we’re grateful for their service. With any transition, it’s also an opportunity for new leaders to step forward and continue supporting our schools.”

Up for re-election at Kasson-Mantorville, is Kate Ryan, current School Board Chair Mark Torkelson, and Patrick Madery.

Ryan confirmed last week, she would not be running.

Torkelson nor Madery responded to an email asking to confirm or deny their re-election plans.

All three members of the board who are up for re-election — are the only three members who have served a full-term on the board.

Eric Mesa, Aaron Stockard, and Elizabeth Armstrong were all elected in 2024.

Amy Olson was also re-elected that term — but resigned shortly after being re-elected. Replacing her was Denise Heidt in a special election.

How to File

Filing for candidacy has the same requirements for all candidates:

•Must be eligible to vote in Minnesota

•Must have not filed for another ofÏce  at the upcoming Primary or General Election

•Must be 21 years of age or more upon assuming office

•Must have maintained residence in their district or city for at least 30 days before the general election.

•Must pay a $2 filing fee at the time of filing.

The filing period for all offices is July 14-July 28 at 5 p.m. with forms available to be downloaded on the secretary of state’s office as well as various local websites and locations listed below. Where to file the affidavits depends on the office. For details, see the list below.

Byron
