BREAKING NEWS: Residents of Claremont evacuated due to gas main due to broken gas line
More than two dozen people were evacuated from buildings in the 200 block of Front Street in Claremont Friday afternoon after a worker struck a gas main while working in the alley.
The Dodge County Sheriff's office received the call at 2:23 p.m. and responded to the scene along with the Claremont Fire Department, said Sgt. Shannon Boerner. The main was quickly capped, he said, but 33 people were evacuated from businesses and apartments.
There were no injuries but officials were still on the scene and residents had not been permitted to re-enter the apartments because of the strong smell of gas.Among the businesses evacuated were the Post Office, American Legion, Claremont Pub and the bank.
