Triton’s Kunz wins state championship
Triton seventh grader Adriana Kunz made history over the weekend, after winning the 100 pound weight class at the high school state championship, at the Xcel Energy Center.
By doing so, she became the first wrestler in the history of the school, to win a state wrestling championship.
“It was a week full of emotions leading up to the state tournament, but on Saturday morning I saw a switch was flipped by Adriana,” Head Coach Mark Evjen said. “She was locked in. To win a state title as a 7th grader is an accomplishment all on its own, but the way she did it is remarkable.”
Kunz was dominant throughout the entire tournament, not giving up a single point match in any of her three matches.
“Adriana’s determination and extra time she puts into the sport during the offseason and in-season earned her that top spot on the podium,” Evjen said.
Kunz called winning a state title an “amazing feeling.”
“I am thankful for my family, coaches, practice partners, and everyone that supported me along the way,” Kunz said.
Byron sends two to podium
The Byron girls wrestling team sent two individuals from the girls team to the podium at the state championship with both Madi Hamilton and Hattie Mathre coming in second place.
Hamilton came in second for the 235 pound weight class, and Hattie Mathre came in second for the 136 pound weight class.
Kadie Augenstein also competed at the state tournament but did not place.
“I thought we had a great weekend,” Head Coach Ryan Radke said after the meet. “Obviously as a coach, you want First Place and so did the Girls. But Byron Wrestling came back with two Runner Up Placers which is great. (two) of the (three) girls return next season so it now gives them new goals to strive for. Very very proud of them.”
