Byron’s Calie Dockter delivers section golf title
ROCHESTER — Calie Dockter didn’t need the leaderboard app on her phone to tell her where she stood, as she peered-out onto the 18th tee at Northern Hills Golf Course on Thursday afternoon, May 30. However, it may have helped her nerves if she had looked at it.“I thought we were tied,” Dockter said after the final round of the Section 1, Class 2A girls golf meet. Her coach knew differently, but didn’t let on.“Today, she didn’t look at anything during her round except her game,” Coach Chad Rolandson said. “She didn’t even know at the last hole that she had a stroke (lead)”—Taking coach’s prudent advice, Dockter laid up and the strategizing all worked out in her favor, as the Byron High School senior parred the 391-yard par-5 18th hole. So did Lake City’s Jordana Windhorst Knudsen, the Section 1-2A medalist the past three years. The matching pars meant Dockter’s one-stroke lead held up and was her margin of victory as she won Section 1-2A medalist honors for the first time in her high school career, in her final section meet.“I was a little nervous just to get out here again and compete, and (the nerves) kind of stayed with me the whole round,” said Dockter, whose season scoring average sits at 79.55, “but toward the end I had settled in a bit and felt less nervous.” Dockter took a four-stroke lead over St. Charles’ Lily Sullivan and a six-shot lead over Windhorst Knudsen — who helped her Lake City team win the section for the fourth consecutive year — into the final round.Dockter and Windhorst Knudsen played in the same grouping Thursday. In the end, a one-stroke difference over 36 holes gave Dockter her first title. She shot 76-85—161, while Windhorst Knudsen went 82-80—162.“It’s super cool,” Dockter said.
