Upset by Byron credit card issues

The announcement that the Byron Public School administration failed to properly document credit card purchases to the tune of almost $60,000 is very upsetting for a couple of reasons.
The administration and school board was well aware of the issue and failed to disclose the matter to the public. At a township informational meeting with the superintendent and at least two school board members present just a couple of weeks prior to the vote on a mill levy override and technology package, no mention was made of the issue. The superintendent said that the practice of having the same person in charge of income and expense reporting had changed. It is very obvious that the timing of the release of the audit report was an attempt to minimize the damage to the public trust.
The vow of transparency to the taxpayers expressed at the public meeting rings hollow, in my opinion. The audit report praised the school for corrective action. Would the release of the nature of the matter have changed how I voted, probably not. I supported the referendums both in 2024 and 2025. But I am upset by the failure of the administration and school board to be totally honest with the public.
