Slow down, drivers
The road work now under way in Mantorville is certainly making travel difficult in that area. Highway 57 is basically closed to all but local traffic and everyone trying to go from north of Mantorville to Kasson in either direction is being sent on a detour.
But in addition to the inconvenience, another issue has surfaced.
People are just driving too fast in Mantorville, particularly down Clay Street.
Business people brought the subject up at last week’s Mantorville Chamber meeting and it was also a topic at the Wednesday afternoon meeting that the project contractor, Elcor Construction, holds weekly with local residents at the County Seat.
After the Wednesday meeting, MnDOT even sent out a release asking people to slow down with a reminder that everyone not needing to be in Mantorville take the detour. And another reminder that law enforcement is aware of the situation.
The release from MnDOT was a good reminder. There have been reports of speeding vehicles and everyone needs to slow down when driving in town.
So here is another reminder.
If you need to travel to Mantorville follow the local traffic only detour signs.
If you are coming from the south on Highway 57, turn west on 4th Street and travel north on Clay Street. You can reach most destinations on the east side of Main Street/Highway 57 by turning left and using a cross street. You will need to look ahead to see which street is open to cross. There will be barricades blocking the streets that are not open.
Everyone else should use the detour — west on Dodge County Road 12 to Dodge County Road 9 to Dodge County Road 16 east.
All that being said, it is important to note that Mantorville is still open for business.
And summer events are going on as planned, including the Spring Fling which is scheduled for May 18.
Just remember that when coming to the city to follow the local traffic routes and watch your speed.
It’s necessary for everyone’s safety.
For those residents interested in the progress being made and what changes may occur in the next week, stop by the County Seat Coffee House, 1 5th St. W. at 2 p.m. Wednesday, when Elcor Construction staff will be meeting in-person.
Water and sewer work is currently being done and will be followed by a reconstruction of the roadway.
It is anticipated that the project will be completed by August 15.
