The Comb Over finds permanent home in Byron

The Comb Over has shifted from a mobile unit to a brick-and-mortar men’s hair salon.

They opened at 957 Frontage Road Northwest in Byron on June 1 and traffic there has been steady since, said owner Erin Mikkalson.

“It’s been good,” she said. “It’s been very busy.”

The mobile unit, which she opened in the fall of 2021, was successful, but it was time for a change. “I sold it to a lady in Montana,” she said of the mobile unit. “She’s going to do the same thing.”

The mobile unit — which was a custom ice shack retrofitted into a barber shop — parked at both Fleet Farm in Rochester and Plaza 57 in Kasson.

“It was very successful,” Mikkalson said. “We built that up and then I was ready to go into a brick-and-mortar. It was a good experience.”

“I wanted to simplify things so people knew exactly where we were,” she said. “There was some confusion sometimes. And Minnesota weather isn’t always nice.”

Her target demographic for haircuts is men and boys. Kids haircuts are $28 and men’s are $32.

Mikkalson works with one colleague and said customers are drawn to their “expertise and awesome personalities.”

She lives in Kasson and has been a hair stylist for 21 years, having worked at Sport Clips and The Barbershop: A Hair Salon for Men, both in Rochester.

She said Byron was her chosen location for her new business because it was situated between Rochester and Kasson. “That way we could keep the majority of our clientele,” she said. “We definitely hope to build the Byron community.”

The Comb Over is open in Byron Tuesday through Sunday.
