Support Torkelson, Madery, Soberg for K-M school board

To the Editor:

The pandemic that we have dealt with for the past couple of years has been exhausting for all of us. It has brought great division among friends and families, and we are praying that we can move on as a nation, as a state, and as a community because the truth is we are a lot more alike than different. At the same time, it is important to point out that there seems to be an attempt by some to pit the teachers in our district against the wishes of the community. Communities need to elect representatives that best align with their values and can boldly and unapologetically voice those values in order to do what is in the best interest of our children – not the teachers' unions. The National Education Association, the country’s largest teacher’s union, is supporting educators that teach critical race theory, a divisive ideology that teaches divisive concepts and shames individuals that are not minorities. CRT is evasive—there is a large umbrella of terms and phrases associated with it, making identification sometimes difficult without being in the classroom with your child.

We cannot let this take hold in our community. We can teach history and a love for country without shaming and dividing. If you think this will never happen here, well, they have already tried, but a group of parents fought back. We must continue to do so. This is why we support Mark Torkelson, Patrick Madery, and Dylan Soberg for the school board. We have confidence they will put our children’s interests above all else.
