Stick with the ‘pros’ for school board

To the Editor:

Go with the Pros.

We take our children to a professional hygienist and dentist; and we typically discuss our child’s care with them, but we do not question the way they do their job — - especially not the way they do it for other people’s children. We take our children to nurses and doctors; and we typically discuss our child’s care with them, but we do not question their professionalism or the way they treat the children of others.

We elect a school board to hire qualified, professional administrators who, in turn, hire trained and qualified professional and paraprofessional educators. And we are absolutely encouraged to discuss the educational needs of our children with their teachers. Why is it, then, that a group of people feel they should be able to go to the teachers’ boss’s bosses to control what the professionals are doing — not only for their own children, but for all children?

Yes, a part of the school board’s responsibility is to act as the mediator between the taxpayers and the employees of the district. But they are also responsible for supporting their employees. As you read through the candidate information in last week’s DCI, I would encourage you to look for school board candidates who do not put themselves in an “us against them” position, but rather one of “us with them for the betterment of K-M students.”
