Reader takes offense at cartoon

To the Editor,

I never thought I'd see the day when I would take offense at an item in the Dodge County Independent. Until now.

Ed Fischer's July 28 cartoon titled "World Production Inc." was offensive and untrue. It depicted multiple babies coming down a conveyor belt contrasted with very sparse production of food and medical care.

According to Macrotrends.net, the world birth rate has steadily declined in the past several decades while world food production has steadily increased (UN Food and Agriculture Org.) Unfortunately, the U.S. has a serious problem with food waste, and many other parts of the world face uneven distribution due to multiple factors.

Health/medical care is an imperfect and complex issue, however, the globalization of medical supplies and devices is booming due to high demand worldwide. I also acknowledge that there is much room for improvement throughout global healthcare systems.

I believe that babies, born and unborn, are our best hope for the future, despite the tens of millions of preborn deaths by abortion yearly. The cartoon misleads the reader to believe that the world cannot feed or care for them.

I realize that I am disputing opinions with facts, but I respectfully request that the editor make better choices for future editorial cartoons.
