One season ends, another begins

Labor Day weekend always seems like a dividing point. The summer season ends and fall begins.

What also marks the end of summer is the Minnesota State Fair. In addition to enjoying the all the fair activities there are many area students who become even more involved by showing their animals or other projects through their participation in 4-H and FFA programs.

This year, Tegan Ridenour had the grand champion market doe and sold the animal in the Purple Ribbon Livestock Auction for $12,375, a new state record. Swanson Meats purchased the animal.

And Anna Ridenour received a $4,000 scholarship from the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association at the livestock auction. She is currently a sophomore at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities majoring in animal science and is a 4-H and FFA member. She is planning a career as a veterinarian.

Congratulations to Tegan, Anna and all the local 4-H and FFA members who participated in the State Fair.

With school starting the fall athletic season is also seeing a full schedule. Volleyball and soccer got an earlier start and the football season officially got under way last weekend. Highlighting the weekend’s football was the always competitive Byron and Kasson-Mantorville game with Byron securing the win. And Triton showed their resolve as they pulled off a come-from behind win against La Crescent-Hokah.

Good luck to all our high school athletes.

But summer isn’t quite over and this weekend it is time for Marigold Days and the Big Iron Classic. This weekend also marks the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Those two events merged locally a few years ago when the Field of Flags became a part of the Marigold Days celebration. Although initially the event was to honor those lost in the attacks and service members it has been expanded to now include all who serve the public including veterans, service members, EMS, police, and fire personnel.

This year the ceremony and flag dedication will be at 1 p.m. in the field by the Dodge County Government Center, 8th Street and Highway 57. It is always an event worth attending.
