Byron boys soccer goes 2-1 on the week

Byron High School boys soccer team had a busy week, playing Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights and going 2-1 through the string.

First up was a game Monday night in Red Wing and was highlighted by Junior Liam Schick scoring all four goals in a 4-1 win. Schick got his first one 4 minutes in, converting a pass from Jaxon Boynton. Red Wing answered back 8 minutes later to even the score.

Schick then scored unassisted at 18 and 36 minutes to lead at halftime. He then came back and scored the final goal 7 minutes into the 2nd half for the 4-1 win. GK Tommy Felty turned back 10 Red Wing shots, while Byron poured on 16 shots on goal.

The next night saw the Bears head to Stewartville, to take on the Tigers. This time Schick sent a nice pass to Boynton, who netted the first goal at 9 minutes. Ben Zimmerman added one from distance at 26 minutes and Schick took a pass from Talon Henderson to get the 3rd goal at 38 minutes. A Stewartville penalty kick was called at 39 minutes and Brady Pickett converted it to bring the half to a close at 3-1, Byron.

Schick from Boynton at 1 minute into the 2nd half increased the lead, but Pickett broke through again and gave Stewartville its second goal. Talon Henderson put the game away at the 76th minute, with a shot from 30 yards out and the game ended Byron 5, Stewartville 2. Tommy Felty had 10 saves for Byron, while the Bears poured on 22 shots. Fullback Aydan Tye had a very good game as did fellow fullback Brayden Olson.

It was the Thursday night game that was the toughest match of the year, when PIZM came to Byron. This was a battle of teams undefeated in conference action, and the first 30 minutes were as good as one could see in high school play.

It was PIZM who scored first on a long distance free kick by Sven Oberg at the 32nd minute. Just two minutes later another long distance free kick was inadvertently misdirected off a Byron fullback, into his own goal. The game remained competitive but Byron was unable to penetrate the PIZM goal and PIZM finished it off in the 70th minute, with a rebound goal to secure the 3-0 win.

Byron GK Tommy Felty had 11 saves while Byron sent 13 shots at PIZM GK Jason Ryan. Ben Zimmerman had a great game in the midfield. The Bears record stands at 3-4-1, with games at Cristo Rey on Monday, Lake City, Tuesday, and John Marshall comes to town on Saturday.
