Byron boys’ soccer earn tie in double overtime

A matchup between last season’s Section 1 Class AA #1 seed Winona and #2 Seed Byron could not be decided after 80 minutes of regulation time and two 5-minute overtimes on Thursday, September 6.

In a very evenly matched, hard-played contest, Byron out shot Winona 20-10, but that did not translate to the scoreboard.

Byron scored first when Jaxon Boynton took a Noah Schrooten pass in behind the Winona back line and out-sprinted them to the goal, with 9 minutes to play in the first half. Winona’s Mason Muller tied it up with 3 minutes left in the half, on a long distance shot that slipped through the hands of Byron GK Tommy Felty.

The Bears went back on top early in the second half, when Ben Zimmerman found Kevin Thomason open on the far post for a brilliant one timer. The Winhawks came back when Nico Stearn scored from a Winona corner kick that dribbled into the goal.

Back-and-forth play could not get either team a game winner, so the game ended tied. Byron’s record is now 1-3-1 and they had a busy week ahead of them; with away games at Red Wing on Monday and Stewartville on Tuesday and then they battle last year’s conference champion PIZM, at home on Thursday.

K-M soccer boys lose to Winhawks

The Kasson-Mantorville boys soccer team was defeated by Winona, 3-1, on Saturday, September 10. Winona provided no stats. Kasson-Mantorville: Gideon Ellinghysen, 1 goal; Goalie Lars Ingram had 10 saves.
