Bears clobber Tigers on the gridiron

ALBERT LEA — Friday, October 14, was the night of the Fox. Byron’s Tyler Fox, that is. He and his team defeated Albert Lea, 46-26, making it three straight wins for the Bears.

The 170-pound senior running back/defensive back, rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns, and caught two passes for 86 yards.

But when Fox turned around to play his defensive position, he really shined brightly. Fox picked off four passes and returned one for a TD.

In fact, the Bears’ entire pass defense gave Albert Lea nightmares. They picked the Tigers off seven times and took two in for touchdowns. Byron quarterback Kale Robinson went 5 for 10 passing for 144 yard and two touchdowns.

Byron finished with 424 yards of offense. (Byron: 26-13-7-0–46; Albert Lea: 6-0-20-0–26)

K-M gridders swamp Wingers

The 10th-ranked Kasson-Mantorville KoMets made good on their appointed status, as they ambushed Red Wing, 49-7, on Friday, October 14. Both sides of the scrimmage line were controlled by the KoMets.

With Minnesota Gopher-to-be, offensive tackle Reese Tripp, at the ready, the KoMets had a plethora of players run the ball circa 300 yards in the rout.

And on defense, Kasson-Mantorville held the Wingers to their lowest point total since opening week, when Red Wing was shut out in Winona. K-M went up 20-0 after the first quarter, sparked by Emmett Ricke’s opening kickoff return for a touchdown.

Points kept coming for the visitors, and after posting a 34-0 advantage at the hiatus, it was safe to say, that’s all she wrote. The fourth quarter saw Red Wing avoid the shutout, with a 25-yard TD pass on a corner route. (K-M: 20, 14, 15, 0—49; Red Wing: 0, 0, 0, 7—7)

Vikings stopped by Trojans

RUSHFORD — The Hayfield football team lost to Rushford-Peterson, 35-13, on Thursday, October 13. R-P held a 21-13 half-time advantage, and that proved to be enough for the Trojan victory.

Hayfield got 152 yards passing from quarterback Ethan Pack, with a pair of touchdowns. He was also intercepted twice. Isaac Matti had 83 yards receiving. Box score: Hayfield: 7-6-0-0–13; Rushford-Peterson: 7-14-7-7–35.

Triton gridders tripped-up on the road

CHATFIELD — If you struggle with accepting that a gopher can overwhelm a cobra, then you apparently hold that same skepticism about the infamous rabbit and hare story. That said, reporting that the Chatfield Gophers dominated the Triton Cobras, 35-0, on the gridiron, Thursday night, October 13, is a bona fide reality.

But in all fairness, the Chatfield boys are a perfect 7-0 on the season, and they’ve been pounding opponents weekly. The Cobras are coming off of a demolishing of their own, when last week, they handed Lewiston-Altura a 48-8 thumping.

Triton Team Totals: 20 yards passing, 120 yards rushing, 140 yards total; Triton Individual Rushing: Boe Munnikhuysen, 4 carries for 37 yards; Francis Price, 7 carries for 10 yards; Jayce Leonardo, 9 carries for 12 yards; Carter Strieff, 5 carries for 12 yards; Owen Garness, 10 carries for 49 yards; Triton Individual Receiving: Boe Munnikhuysen, 1 catch for (-4) yard; Matthew Rossopoulos, 2 catches for 15 yards; Owen Garness, 4 catches for 9 yards.
