Hayfield fire responds to rural BP blaze

A home in rural Blooming Prairie was destroyed by fire Friday morning, displacing the man who lived there.

The call came in to the Dodge County dispatch center at 7:03 a.m., sending Blooming Prairie firefighters to 69261 120th Ave.

Hayfield Fire Department was auto-called and also responded, as did Blooming Prairie Ambulance.

The 1,800-square-foot home was fully involved by the time they arrived, said Blooming Prairie Fire Chief Dean Naatz.

“The roof was already gone; the west side was already gone,” he said. “It had been burning a while.”

The owner of the home, Chad Hamersma, told firefighters he had left for his job in Austin about 6 a.m., “and everything was normal.”

The state fire marshal is investigating to determine the cause of the fire, which Naatz said appeared to have started on the southwest side of the structure.

Firefighters were on the scene until about 9:30 a.m.

No one was injured, and no other buildings were damaged on the farm site.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist Hamersma, Naatz said.
