K-M teacher wins STEM award

Isaac Ydstie, a 6-8 grade teacher from Kasson-Mantorville Public Schools, is one of two educators who has won the STEM Forward Outstanding Educators Award that celebrates educators from southeast Minnesota.

“Isaac Ydstie is the embodiment of striving for STEM educational excellence,” said Ashley Kaplan, Director of Teaching and Learning at Kasson-Mantorville Public Schools. “Since Mr. Ydstie began teaching at Kasson-Mantorville Middle School, we have seen an increase in student achievement in science, even during the pandemic. While the student rate for science proficiency in Minnesota decreased by 10 percent from 2019 to 2021 for eighth graders across the state, Kasson-Mantorville Schools increased eighth grade proficiency by 3 percent from 2019 to 2021.”

Kaplan, who nominated Ydstie for the STEM award, called Ydstie “very talented,” and said the increase in test scores is a “tribute to the critical thinking skills, how Mr. Ydstie has built student ownership of learning in his courses.”

Ydstie teaches robotics, woodworking, design and modeling and STEM 6 and STEM 7 at K-M Middle School. He found out he’d won the award in December, when Kaplan and another educator presented him with a certificate during a class.
